![]() ![]() To reset your NVRAM, you use exactly the same procedure you once used to reset PRAM. NVRAM serves approximately the same purpose as PRAM, but instead of storing a dozen or more pieces of information, it now contains just a few: your selected startup disk, speaker volume, screen resolution, time zone, and-if your Mac has crashed recently-details of the last kernel panic. ![]() Modern Macs no longer use PRAM they instead use something called NVRAM (NV for non-volatile). So you could press a key sequence at startup to reset (or “zap”) the PRAM, returning it to default, factory values. If the values in this memory got out of whack for one reason or another, your Mac might not start up correctly or might exhibit any of numerous odd behaviors afterward. The P in PRAM stood for “parameter” (the RAM was just RAM-random access memory), and it referred to a small amount of special, battery-backed memory in every Mac that stored information the computer needed before it loaded the operating system. There is a way to go further but it involves creating a automator workflow as a service and using applescript to invoke a terminal command to shutdown without asking for confirmation first.Back in the day, the standard list of quick fixes for random Mac ailments always included clearing the PRAM. You should see a dialog box appear asking you if you wish to reopen pages when logging back in, if you do nothing then it will time out when the counter gets to zero, or you can hit enter hey) the computer is put into listen mode then when you say shutdown my mac (or whatever phrase you use) Sierra will then press the keyboard shortcut that shuts down the mac. Now when you say the first part of your command to call Siri (e.g. close system preferences to enable it to work in the last box enter the keyboard shortcut you created in step 6 and then click doneġ2. leave the first box as it is and in the next box named menu item enter "Shut Down." (without the quotes)ġ1. click app shortcuts at the left hand side at the bottom and click + to create a new shortcutġ0. go to system preferences and keyboard then shortcutsĩ. in the last box choose press keyboard shortcut and enter a keyboard shortcut not used by other apps, I choseĨ. in the first box enter the phrase shutdown my mac (or whatever phrase you wish to use)Ħ. click on dictation command and click the + button to create a new commandĤ. Now we can go a step further and use this thinking to shut down the mac.ģ. Now when you close system preferences and say the phrase hey computer it will launch siri in the next box leave it set to all applications and in the last box choose the option launch application click the + button and in the first box enter the second part of your command so in this example it would be computerħ. click the button at the top marked dictation commandĦ. ![]() Just put hey (try not to put hey Siri as otherwise you will accidentally call Siri on nearby iPhones)ĥ. in the box below enter the first part of the phrase you wish to use to invoke Siri. scroll down in the left hand pane to dictationĤ. launch system preferences and go to accessibilityĢ. It is important to understand this first step so that the next step that involves shutting down your mac using Siri makes sense.ġ. This though is not a feature present in Sierra and involves a workaround. There is a way to firstly invoke Siri handsfree just like on the iPhone.
